Our Story
Robotics and Engineering in Allegany County--Together, Inc. (REACT) is a 501(c)3 educational nonprofit whose mission is “to develop engaging and fun robotics learning and character building experiences for all young people throughout Allegany County. We challenge students to use critical thinking, collaboration and communication skills to address real-world problems.”
REACT works to give Allegany County students world-class robotics learning experiences. Since our founding, REACT has trained coaches and raised money to provide robotics equipment for local competition teams. Under our leadership, Allegany County robotics grew from 4 teams to 25 teams, and the number of students served grew from 35 to over 800 in just 5 years!
Our Next Goal: A Home for Advanced Robotics
From day one, REACT has had a long-term goal of acquiring a building to serve as our base of operations and provide our students a place to flourish. We always knew that when the many young students we coached on elementary and middle school teams fell in love with robotics and moved up to the senior high level, we would need to find a space large enough to house teams that would compete at the highest level. This competition, called FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), takes place on a robot field that is 27’x 54’--a little more than half the width and length of a basketball court. FRC prepares students for college programs in engineering and computer science by pairing them with local STEM professionals to solve complex robotics challenges.
A Perfect Solution
Now, REACT has identified a home base for our robotics events and practices! The former Parish Hall of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, located at 120 Fayette Street fits our needs and gives us room to grow.
Four years ago, REACT developed specifications for an ideal facility. The Parish Hall checks all the boxes. Among this building’s best features is a wide open, unobstructed space on the main floor that will provide us with ample room for an advanced high school robotics team to fabricate and test its large robots. On the lower floor, there is space to hold classes and meetings. In addition, this building has plenty of parking and bathrooms to accommodate our summer camps and evening open houses. We are thrilled with the opportunity this building will offer us to reach more students with engaging and fun robotics education experiences!
Help Us Give Allegany County this Important Educational Asset
We need to raise $300,000 towards the purchase and renovation of the Fayette Street building. If we can collect half that amount in donations, we will have a good chance of receiving a matching grant from state or federal sources.
